The long-vacant Hallinan Center for the campus of Case Western Reserve University was renovated in 2015 to be the new location of the Hillel Student Center on a prominent corner of University Circle. The space now offers nearly 12,000 s.f. through a 1,600 s.f. addition that creates a public presence along Euclid Avenue, offering increased accessibility to the various functions it hosts, including a Kosher café, classrooms for CWRU, offices and conferencing, a student lounge, and flexible event space. The new façade, clad in faceted stone and metal panels with brick beyond, mediates the street level that falls between the two floors of the center. The building envelope and systems were updated to improve performance while creating greater transparency into the building and between the new spaces, celebrating the unique existing geometry. Due to the team’s decision to demolish a concrete bridge and stair cutting across the site, students may gather about a suspended fireplace inside the center while looking onto the InterFaith Plaza, which has increased openness and opportunities for public landscape.
